Why did HBO Max get rid of FBoy Island? ›

The show's cancelation is not a huge surprise; Deadline revealed that HBO Max was pulling out of unscripted originals over the summer as part of a major cost-cutting move that led to the departure of its reality team led by Jen O'Connell.

Amid numerous cancellations, mix-ups, and even the complete erasure of series and films from HBO Max, we've reached the HBO-pocalypse. The streamer has canceled FBoy Island, one of the most captivating reality dating series in recent memory.

HBO Max will remove 36 titles from its service as early as this week, Variety has confirmed. A spokesperson for HBO Max attributed the decision to the pending merge of the platform with Discovery+, which is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

Early on, the Max content portfolio was heavy on HBO-ish fare, and as much as that pleased TV critics and fans of HBO, it didn't do nearly enough to juice subscriptions or generate viewership (which matters because Max, unlike HBO, is in the advertising business). Worse, it cost a lot of money to make.
